We Need YOU to Protect the License!

Professional engineers maintain their license in one or more states or territories, following the rules enforced by that state or territory. Unfortunately, the rules promulgated for the license as well as the laws creating the license in each state and territory can be amended by legislators with no background in engineering and without a clear understanding of the professional engineer’s role in protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public. For this reason, it is the responsibility of all professional engineers to understand the role they play in advocating for the need for licensure and defending the profession. This session will provide an overview of the legislative process at the federal and state levels and discuss how engineers can become advocates and engage with their legislators. Examples of legislation introduced over the last few years in various states will also be outlined to provide clarity on the various ways the profession has come under attack.

Leanne H. Panduren, P.E., F.NSPE

A 1993 civil engineering graduate of Michigan Technological University (MTU), Panduren was hired by ROWE in 1994, named President in 2014, and CEO in 2016. In 2019, she also assumed the role of Chairman of the Board. She currently works from ROWE’s headquarters in Flint, Michigan. Her engineering career has centered around assisting municipalities in completing a wide variety of infrastructure projects, including utility, road, and non-motorized system improvements. She maintains her professional engineering license in Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Panduren has actively promoted excellence and education in the field of engineering for many years through her work with professional engineering societies at the local, state, and national level, and by serving on professional advisory boards for MTU and as a guest lecturer for Michigan State University. She has served in leadership positions for the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technologies and currently serves as the Chair of the NPSE Committee on Policy and Advocacy. She is also active in her community through a variety of roles on several boards for organizations with philanthropic and economic development focuses.
