Winning More Business: Using Forensic Engineering Expertise as a Competitive Differentiator
Includes a Live Web Event on 11/05/2025 at 2:00 PM (EST)
Experience Level: Any level of experience
Forensic engineering is often viewed as a reactive toolset used to determine why something went wrong. But what if we flipped that model, and used the same techniques to make sure things go right the first time?
In this session, veteran petroleum engineer, operator, and expert witness Harold E. McGowen III, P.E. will show how tools such as Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Prevention through Design (PtD) become proactive business levers for boosting safety, driving operational efficiency, and minimizing litigation exposure. The emphasis is on using forensic techniques to fuel innovation, efficiency, and safety, before problems occur.
Drawing on a career spanning more than four decades in exploration and development of oil and gas, including 40+ expert-witness assignments covering well-control failures, equipment defects, catastrophic injuries, patent disputes, and trade-secret disputes, McGowen will guide participants through illustrative case scenarios derived from professional experience that could have been prevented had forensic principles been applied up-front.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Transition from Reactive to Proactive by employing Forensic Engineering tools such as RCA, FMEA, and PtD to improve processes, products, and services, both by preventing incidents and identifying material weaknesses. The ultimate objective is to develop mitigation strategies that enhance efficiency and quality.
2. Bridge operations and litigation: Demonstrating application of these tools to solve industrial problems makes you a stronger, more credible expert witness backed by real-world engineering leadership.
3. Differentiate your business: If you’re a Forensic Engineering consultant leave with actionable ideas to win more work through improving industrial clients’ products, processes and services efficiency, reliability, and safety.
